e-instruments have announced the launch of Desolate Guitars, a new Kontakt-based instrument that has been developed in collaboration with guitarist and producer Seton Daunt. It captures a selection of classic solid, hollow body and baritone guitars plugged straight into a pair of iconic vintage amps, and also throws in a modelled tremolo effect and a signal taken from a real spring reverb for good measure.
The company say that the instrument places a premium on authenticity, playability, and versatility. It is presented in a clean and simple GUI that aims to offer effortless access to the sounds without the need to use keyswitches or configure controllers. A range of articulations including sustains, mutes, vibrato bar performances are joined by chords and looped texture patches with major and minor variations. All of the presets utilise both amps and all of the built-in effects capabilities, overing users full control over the amount of processing applied to any of the patches.
A slider in the GUI makes it possible to blend seamlessly between the two amp models, and is followed by a Tremolo section that has been modelled on vintage amps and also offers three additional styles inspired by popular effects pedals — a Sync-To-Host function makes it possible to quickly synchronise the effect to the host DAW’s tempo. Another slider then provides control over the level of the spring reverb signal, whilst an Effects dial provides access to a range of additional effects chain presets designed specifically for guitar.

Desolate Guitars runs in Native Instruments Kontakt 7 Player, or Kontakt 7 (version 7.6.1 or higher) which are supported on PCs running Windows 10 or 11, and Macs running macOS 11, 12 or 13. VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available, along with a standalone application.
