Roland have announced the launch of the Version 3 update for their popular SP-404 MkII compact sampler device. Containing a wide variety of new features and enhancements, this latest software promises to make the unit an even more powerful tool for live performers and music producers alike.
The SP-404 MkII’s on-board sequencer now offers improved stability when playing multiple long audio files, enabling users to perform using sets of multi-track files created within DAW software with perfect synchronisation. MIDI synchronisation has also been optimised, with improvements being made to clock timing, and an adjustable delay being added to the MIDI Clock output to assist with integrating external instruments.
A range of performance-based functions have also been introduced: a One-Shot Playback mode allows users to perform with long, evolving samples, whilst still mixing in shorter loops, and a pair of Pad Mute and Pad Mute Automation features provide a quick and easy way to mute and unmute patterns during performances, as well as capture sequences of actions.
DJ Mode has been expanded, with it now being possible to manipulate up to eight cue points per sample, adjust fader curves and assign time-stretch functions. It is also now possible to convert any pattern into a sample with a single button press, meaning complex programming can be turned into a manageable loops for quick and easy song building.
The update also provides a variety of other workflow enhancements, including the ability to quantise parts after recording, and a finer range of tempo settings have been introduced. The instrument’s companion editor and librarian software has also been improved, boasting faster import and export speeds, along with VST3 and AU3 plug-in support that allow it to be used directly within DAW software on both Mac and Windows platforms.

The update is available now, and is a free download for existing users. The SP-404MKII is priced at $599.99.
