Sample Logic’s original Drum Fury library got a five‑star review in the June 2019 issue of SOS. Their latest release — Drum Fury Motion — builds on the same broad area of cinematic drums but, this time, combines a sample‑based drum and percussion library with the powerful step‑based pattern sequencing engine found within some of their other Kontakt‑based instruments such as Symphonic AI and Motion Keys. In Drum Fury Motion, a full preset can therefore be built from two of the underlying drum sounds and each of these has its own step‑sequencing engine slot, with options to sequence a whole range of note and effect parameters. The product includes over 6GB of sample data, over 1800 instruments and presets and requires the full version of Kontakt (v6.7.1 or higher).
Drum Fury Motion’s sounds are derived from many of the same sorts of cinematic‑friendly drum types as the earlier library but, compared side‑by‑side, the new release also includes some more contemporary sources such as beatbox, metals and synth‑based sounds. The other obvious difference between the two products is in triggering the sounds. Drum Fury is designed to let you play the sounds via your MIDI keyboard (a more conventional sample library approach) while, in Drum Fury Motion, you are triggering the step‑sequencer patterns. It’s a different way of working but both approaches have their merits.
The step‑sequencing environment is pretty deep and does require a little time to fully appreciate. It’s time well spent though, as this is powerful stuff. It’s also where that modern edge to the sound is enhanced further because the various effects options — both within the step sequencer and in the Mix and Master sections of the UI — make it possible to easily move the sounds between conventional ambience treatments through to fully‑blown sound design. It can do conventional drum sounds but if you want the option for high‑tech and processed percussion within your score, Drum Fury Motion can also fulfil that need.
The Sample Logic team obviously had a lot of fun with these tools creating the extensive list of presets, and media composers are going to find lots here that can be dropped straight into an action or drama cue. Once you dig in, creating your own presets and rhythms is easy enough but the UI also offers a whole range of randomisation options that quickly let you search for some additional variations or inspiration.
...if you need tools that both inspire and help you meet a tight deadline, Drum Fury Motion would make an excellent choice.
Drum Fury Motion sounds great and, with its pattern‑based playback and cutting‑edge sound‑design options, it would make a great complement and/or alternative to a more conventional ‘epic drums and percussion’ library (such as the original Drum Fury). It is obviously aimed at (and priced for) busy media composers, but if you need tools that both inspire and help you meet a tight deadline, Drum Fury Motion would make an excellent choice.
